Brett Haubrich
In 2014, the now 12-year-old Brett Haubrich was diagnosed with anaplastic astrocytoma, an inoperable brain tumor in the thalamus. He had surgery at St. Louis Children’s Hospital to relieve symptoms due to hydrocephalus and to biopsy the tumor. Aggressive radiation and chemotherapy treatments followed. Then those wonderful words came – “the tumor responded very well to the treatment, even better than the doctors expected,” said Brett’s ecstatic mom, Eileen.
This St. Louis boy loves baseball and especially football. He has maintained good grades at St. Mark Catholic School even though he was absent a week per month during his treatments. He received the Student of the Year award.
Brett has had a strong religious conviction since he was very young, his mom says. After his story was told in The Review, the St. Louis Catholic newspaper, he became an inspiration to even more people.
“Brett says that God has made him stronger than this tumor,” Eileen reports.
He has participated in children’s cancer research fundraisers and in St. Baldrick’s Foundation fundraiser where his team raised more than $10,000.
